Traditional quentão: simple and tasty

In Brazil, mulled wine is known in the southern region as “quentão” and consists of a heated mixture of wine, ginger, sugar and spices such as cloves and cinnamon. According to folklorist Amadeu Amaral, in O dialeto caipira (1920), “quentão” is a word of rustic origin. “Quentão” means very hot.

In the Southeast and Northeast regions of Brazil, “quentão” is the name given to a similar drink made with cachaça instead of wine. The variation is due to the large sugarcane production in these regions and greater difficulty in accessing wine, which is more widely produced in the southern region.
